“MAKE DO WITH”

It’s time for your weekly dose of PHRASE FACTS! For work, leisure,
travel, or just a plain conversation over a hot cup of coffee,
we will feature phrases and expressions that will surely help
you develop your vocabulary!
For this week’s PHRASE FACTS, we will tackle the phrase “make do with”. What does it mean? How do we use it? When do we use it?
Well folks, “Make do with” is a phrase we use when we want to express that we are substituting something that is not available. We use what we can find as an alternative. Take a look at these examples:
“The beach is too far from our city, so we make do with
a homemade swimming pool at the back yard.”
In this example, the speaker has a homemade swimming pool at his backyard. Instead of travelling for hours just to get to the beach, he and his family can take a dip at home.
“Don’t be silly! If you run out of tomato sauce, you shouldn’t
make do with ketchup! That will ruin the taste!”
Here, the speaker is telling a person, who is cooking spaghetti, about
an ingredient he shouldn’t substitute with something else.
(Ketchup instead of tomato sauce? Seriously?)
“I really wanted to see Kanye West perform on stage but I can’t leave
my brother at home alone. I guess I’ll have to make do with
watching YouTube videos of the concert that people post on line. ”
We can also see that in these examples, we use “make do with” if the
subjects have no choice but to settle for a less satisfactory substitute.
(By the way, Kanye West is NOT my favorite rapper.)
There you have it! You now know how to use the phrase “make do with”. That wasn’t too difficult, was it? Now you are officially one phrase smarter than you were! Until next time!

"Help yourself!"

"Help yourself!"

It's time for your weekly dose of PHRASE FACTS! For work, leisure,
travel, or just a plain conversation over a hot cup of coffee, we will
feature phrases and expressions that will surely help you develop your
vocabulary!

For this week's Phrase Facts, the spotlight is on the expression "help yourself".
You might say you can easily guess the phrase's meaning
by simply looking at it word for word. Basing on that, you can say
"Since nobody is around to help you, only you can help yourself", right? WRONG!

Actually, we use the expression "help yourself" when people ask us for something
and we let them have it. For example:

(Ozzy and Dio are at the cafeteria having lunch.)

Ozzy: Hey, Dio. Your lunch looks very appetizing. What is that?
Dio: Oh, this is Mom's special lasagna.
Ozzy: Can I have some?
Dio: Sure! Here, help yourself.

We can see in the dialogue that Ozzy is willingly offering Dio his lunch. In some cases,
we also use this expression when people ask permission from you to do something,
and you allow them to. For example:

(Bart and Lisa are at the living room practicing saxophone.)

Lisa: You should learn to breathe properly when playing the saxophone, Bart.
Bart: Okay, I understand. I want to be better at playing the saxophone
but I don't have one. May I practice on your saxophone until dad buys
         me my own?
Lisa: Of course, Bart. Help yourself.

In this dialogue Lisa doesn't mind if Bart practices on her saxophone.

"Help yourself" isn't too complicated to understand. When somebody says "help yourself"
after you asked them for a slice of that cheesy tuna pizza, you SHOULDN'T
literally help yourself by making your left hand assist your right hand. Think about it.

Until next time!

WHY IS LEARNING ENGLISH IMPORTANT?

There are thousands of reasons why learning English is important. I listed some of my reasons why it is fundamental for a person to be well-versed in the different aspects of the language.

COMMUNICATION
English is the universal language or the most commonly used language nowadays.  How would it be possible for us to communicate with other nationalities if we don’t speak English? When we communicate, English is the common tongue.  Aside from that, most of the social media are now adapting English as their language.

EMPLOYMENT
English will secure your employment, or at least provide you with a higher success rate in finding a job regardless of which country you are in. If you are going to apply for a job, most of the time, companies prefer to conduct interviews in English. That is the reality!

EDUCATION
English has become the mother language of subjects such as Math, Science, and many more. You would not understand the mathematical equations as well as the principles of science and the law of inertia if you're unable to comprehend English. Besides that, most of the teachers prefer reports and researches by the students done in English to the ones done in the native language.

INDUSTRIES
English has been used in different industries. Most of the industries involved in reports, research, multimedia or film use English. When you make deals with your clients, English is the most practical language to speak.

To sum it all up, English is a game changer in every field and it would be impossible for our civilization to progress and stabilize without it. It has connected countries in terms of commerce, helped people reach their dreams and provide for their families, and enlightened developing countries through education. I hope this article helps you. You are free to add some reasons why you think learning English is important.
