KARATE CLASS at Genius English Proficiency Academy!

The students and teachers prepared themselves for action. They learned the basics of Karate and self-defense from Yusuke, a black belter who is currently studying TOEIC at our academy.

And with the setting of the Sun arose new Karate masters!

Everybody enjoyed this session thanks to Yusuke!

"PREPPIN' FOR CHRISTMAS!"

The Genius family started embellishing the school with christmas decorations on November 11, 2015. It's very delightful to see the staff merrily hanging misletoes, and christmas ornament balls all over the place!

At the lobby, we can see Miss Natali, Kevin, Miss Carol, and Miss Jenifer setting the holiday spirit.

Santa Clause images on the doors really add up to the Yuletide season atmosphere. Those mini christmas trees at the cafeteria look nice! And that angel is adorable!

"BUSINESS ENGLISH TRAINING DAY 2"

The Genius teachers had their second day of Business English Training on November 7, 2015. This session was facilitated by Teachers Virginia and Jill. On that day, the topic was about Basic Telephone skill in business setting, Business writing, and an overview of IELTS training. The teachers enjoyed sharing ideas among themselves and it was a very productive day, indeed! To top that, Ms. Jenifer provided delicious snacks for everyone! Thank you Miss Jenifer! :D

"BUSINESS ENGLISH TRAINING DAY 1"

On October 24, 2015, the Genius teachers attended the first day of Business English training. The four-hour long training was facilitated by Teachers Cholo, Red and with some help from Teacher Levi. The aim of the training is to refresh the teacher's knowledge in Business English and how to deliver the lessons effectively, and most importantly, to share among themselves some techniques in dealing with different student attitudes, levels, learning styles, and age groups.

"BRACE YOURSELVES: HALLOWEEN IS COMING!" DAY 2

On the second day of preparation for Halloween (October 29, 2015), we can really see the teachers maximizing their efforts in making the place look spooky and exciting!

The welcome signs look great teachers! Good job! Oh, and I like the adorable owl!

It looks like Teacher Eppie is having some serious cleaning problems. Also, Teacher Jane appears satisfied in her spider cave and Teacher Feodda is having  a little potion party with a witch. What's this? Offerings to the Halloween Goddess? Look! I can see Teacher Blanche through the glass window being attacked by a bunch of Jack-O-Lanterns! Uhm, Ladies, you can clean that up after Halloween, don't worry.

Ghosts! Spiders! Reapers! Jack-O-Lanterns! Skulls! Bats! More ghosts!

And what's a Halloween party without a witch on a broomstick? Oh, these look fantastic. I think this will be a very memorable Halloween for everybody, knowing that this will be the very first Genius English Halloween party! Oh, and I almost forgot, GIANT TIM BURTON STYLE DOOR! :D

"FIRST EVER ZUMBA SESSION!"

Yesterday, October 27, the teachers and students took part in the very first Zumba session at the second floor of Genius English Proficiency Academy.

Everybody started putting on their sports and exercise gear immediately after the last class period. Dressed in brightly colored spandex and yoga wear, the participants settled on their spots and started warming up to the music.

The session was led by the lovely Miss Bella, who is an experienced Zumba instructor. Undoubtedly, everybody is inspired by how well sculpted her body is, which only means one thing: She is an effective instructor!

Whoever says teachers only stick to the books all the time clearly hasn’t seen the Genius teachers in action!

Come join us and stay fit while learning English! Sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00PM to 7:00PM!

"BRACE YOURSELVES, HALLOWEEN IS COMING!"

As Halloween creeps closer and closer, Genius is getting ready to welcome it!

Students and teachers were greeted with hair-raising ghosts and ghouls! Jack-o-lanterns were popping out from the bushes frightening anyone who attempts to come near. Creatures of the night were screeching across the hall! And to top that, bats, the children of darkness were swarming the whole campus, getting ready to lay waste all throughout the place!

With the combined efforts of Ms. Kate, our very own Ms. Tatiana, and the rest of the Genius staff, the spooky and mischievous ambiance has been set, awaiting the grand scary event we all love!

Brace yourselves, HALLOWEEN IS COMING!

“MAKE DO WITH”

It’s time for your weekly dose of PHRASE FACTS! For work, leisure,
travel, or just a plain conversation over a hot cup of coffee,
we will feature phrases and expressions that will surely help
you develop your vocabulary!

For this week’s PHRASE FACTS, we will tackle the phrase “make do with”. What does it mean? How do we use it? When do we use it?
Well folks, “Make do with” is a phrase we use when we want to express that we are substituting something that is not available. We use what we can find as an alternative. Take a look at these examples:

“The beach is too far from our city, so we make do with
a homemade swimming pool at the back yard.”

In this example, the speaker has a homemade swimming pool at his backyard. Instead of travelling for hours just to get to the beach, he and his family can take a dip at home.

“Don’t be silly! If you run out of tomato sauce, you shouldn’t
make do with ketchup! That will ruin the taste!”

Here, the speaker is telling a person, who is cooking spaghetti, about
an ingredient he shouldn’t substitute with something else.
(Ketchup instead of tomato sauce? Seriously?)

“I really wanted to see Kanye West perform on stage but I can’t leave
my brother at home alone. I guess I’ll have to make do with
watching YouTube videos of the concert that people post on line. ”

We can also see that in these examples, we use “make do with” if the
subjects have no choice but to settle for a less satisfactory substitute.
(By the way, Kanye West is NOT my favorite rapper.)

There you have it! You now know how to use the phrase “make do with”. That wasn’t too difficult, was it? Now you are officially one phrase smarter than you were! Until next time!

"Help yourself!"

"Help yourself!"

It's time for your weekly dose of PHRASE FACTS! For work, leisure, 

travel, or just a plain conversation over a hot cup of coffee, we will 

feature phrases and expressions that will surely help you develop your

vocabulary!

For this week's Phrase Facts, the spotlight is on the expression "help yourself". 

You might say you can easily guess the phrase's meaning

by simply looking at it word for word. Basing on that, you can say 

"Since nobody is around to help you, only you can help yourself", right? WRONG!

Actually, we use the expression "help yourself" when people ask us for something 

and we let them have it. For example:

(Ozzy and Dio are at the cafeteria having lunch.)

Ozzy: Hey, Dio. Your lunch looks very appetizing. What is that?

Dio: Oh, this is Mom's special lasagna.

Ozzy: Can I have some?

Dio: Sure! Here, help yourself.

We can see in the dialogue that Ozzy is willingly offering Dio his lunch. In some cases, 

we also use this expression when people ask permission from you to do something, 

and you allow them to. For example:

(Bart and Lisa are at the living room practicing saxophone.)

Lisa: You should learn to breathe properly when playing the saxophone, Bart.

Bart: Okay, I understand. I want to be better at playing the saxophone 

         but I don't have one. May I practice on your saxophone until dad buys 

         me my own?

Lisa: Of course, Bart. Help yourself.

In this dialogue Lisa doesn't mind if Bart practices on her saxophone.

"Help yourself" isn't too complicated to understand. When somebody says "help yourself" 

after you asked them for a slice of that cheesy tuna pizza, you SHOULDN'T 

literally help yourself by making your left hand assist your right hand. Think about it.

STUDY HARD, PLAY HARDER!

STUDY HARD, PLAY HARDER!

Here at Genius English Proficiency Academy, we promote an environment conducive to extensive learning, may it be for  General English, Business English, IELTS, or TOEFL.

However, there is a saying that goes "Work hard, play harder," or should I say "Study hard, play harder". Everybody could use a little adrenaline rush every once in a while. What better way to exercise your hand-eye coordination than to have a quick match with your fellow students, or better yet, the teachers!

The stage is set for our players, so grab your popcorn and get yourself a comfortable seat, for you are in for a big treat! Here we can see Abadi, from Saudi Arabia and Vlad, from Russia having an intense game at our brand new billiard table. At the ping-pong table, we can see the "Clash of the Titans". Grisha, from Russia, is taking on Teacher Levi! Go get 'em guys! Who do you think won?
